No one is quite sure of the history behind it. The most credible theory is that it was inherited from South Shields who many year ago transferred to Gateshead to become the present club.
The Gateshead song is the Laurel and Hardy classic "The Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia", In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, on the trail of the lonesome pine. In the pale moon shine, a hearts and twine, She carves her name and I carve mine. Oh, June! Like the mountain's of blue like the pine... I am lonesome for you... In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, on the trail of the lonesome pine!
