Advance Australia Fair was adopted as Australia's official national anthem on 19 April 1984, chosen via a public plebiscite in 1977 where it won a four-song vote ahead of Waltzing Matilda, God Save the Queen, and The Song of Australia.
What's the story behind Advance Australia Fair?
The second line was updated in 2021 from 'For we are young and free' to 'For we are one and free', acknowledging Australia's Indigenous history. Advance Australia Fair has been heard at Socceroos fixtures since 1984.
