Tony Yeboah
Leeds chant for Tony Yeboah, 32-goal striker and 1995/96 Player of the Year.
'Tony Yeboah' is the Leeds United chant for the Ghanaian striker who arrived in January 1995 and scored 32 goals in 66 games, including the thunderbolt at Wimbledon that won BBC Goal of the Season. The Whites have sung it as long as the memory has lasted. One of the great Leeds United songs. Full lyrics below.
Lyrics for Tony Yeboah
When was Tony Yeboah first sung?
Built up across Yeboah's Leeds career, January 1995 to summer 1997 (he left for Hamburger SV that summer and retired in 2002). Player of the Year 1995/96. The chant survives because the goals do, especially the Wimbledon Goal of the Season volley and the Liverpool Goal of the Month a month earlier.
What's the story behind Tony Yeboah?
Yeboah's 3 hat-tricks in 1995 came against Ipswich (April, 4-0 win at Elland Road), Monaco (UEFA Cup, 12 September), and Wimbledon (Selhurst Park, 23 September). The Wimbledon hat-trick included the BBC Goal of the Season; the Liverpool volley a month earlier had taken Goal of the Month.
