Brighton fans began singing Sussex by the Sea around 1910, the year the club won the Southern Charity Cup and were informally recognised as Champions of England. The song had been written 3 years earlier as an unofficial county anthem for Sussex.
What's the story behind Good Old Sussex by the Sea?
The song was written in 1907 by William Ward-Higgs and adopted by Brighton fans around 1910, making it one of the oldest football anthems in England, predating You'll Never Walk Alone at Liverpool by over half a century. Since the Amex opened in 2011 a Grenadier Guards recording plays as the teams walk out.
